Back on land, the contrasting downlands and vales offer a network of cycle paths, bridleways and byways perfect for walking, horse riding or cycling. The Wansdyke and the Ridgeway National Trail offer a more challenging, peaceful off-road ride, while the canal towpath allows you to stroll and take it all in your stride.
The Wiltshire Cycleway threads its way through Kennet along quiet country lanes passing many of the district’s most attractive places to visit. The 160 mile route is supplemented by a network of shorter loops offering a wide choice of distance and terrain. Various cycling publications are available from the Tourist Information Centres.
The Devizes to Westminster canoe race commences from the Wharf at Devizes on Good Friday and is a spectacular sight, although you need to be up early to catch the start!
Mountain boarding is becoming increasingly popular in the area, and the steep sloping hills of the Marlborough Downs are also perfect for kite flying on windy days.
Barbury Castle is home to a racecourse, which in July is hosting an international two day event based around dressage, show-jumping and cross country. There are various other equestrian events taking place at this stunning location throughout the year.
